It’s that time of year again!! Time to sign up for our biggest event of the year – Five Alarm’s Friday Night Lights (FNL)!
FNL starts on Friday, February 22 and runs every Friday night for 5 weeks, ending Friday, March 22. Get excited, check out the changes this year and sign by January 31!
If you have any questions after reading through this document, don’t hesitate to ask a Coach, email us at info@fivealarmfitness.com or hit us up on social media! We will host a FaceBook Live session on Friday, January 18th to answer questions!! We can’t wait to see you all there!
What is Friday Night Lights and how will it work?
FNL is a weekly event thrown at Five Alarm CrossFit every Friday night for the 5 weeks of the Open. The gym sets up in a competition style format, and FNL athletes will complete the Open workout for that week in a series of heats, with judges and all!
Every Thursday night, sign ups for heats on Friday night will be available at fivealarmfitness.com/events. First come, first serve! If you don’t get a chance to register or forget, no worries, you’ll just have to fill in an empty spot.
Friday Night Schedule:
- 5:00 pm doors open (no 5:00pm class)
- 5:30 pm athlete/judges briefing w/ performance tips, judging standards, and heat assignments
- 6:00 pm heats start and continue until finished
In addition to simply running the CrossFit Open workouts, we have a friendly, themed inner-gym competition. Five Alarm Staff has chosen a theme and 2 Team Captains (Coach Ryan Reilly for Team Clean and Jocks, and Barry Reilly for Team Revenge of the Nerds). On February 1, everyone who has signed up for the Open with Five Alarm will be “drafted” by these Team Captains in a closed-door draft. Any athlete that registers after the Draft will be randomly assigned to a team, so get in early!
Every week, teams will earn points for completing the Open workouts. At the end of the Open, one team will emerge victorious! Points will be earned as follows…
- 1 point – for each person on your team who completes the WoD & submits a score for that week.
- 1 point – for each person on your team who judges another athlete for that week. (Don’t worry, we’ll go over judging and movement standards before each workout!)
- 3-2-1 POINTS – for each person on your team who finishes in the top 3 (male Rx/Scaled, female Rx/Scaled) for the gym that week.
- 1 point – for each person on your team who posts a hashtag/shoutout on social media for that week. (Hashtags to be announced!)
- 5 points – to the person with the most team spirit each week.

NEW FOR THIS YEAR! Instead of registering with CrossFit.com, you’ll register directly with Five Alarm by January 31. For the first time, this will allow us to run the CrossFit Open, but for OURSELVES, with 100% of proceeds going to gym/equipment improvements and if you choose, a 2019 Open/Five Alarm CrossFit FNL tee or tank. Scoring will not be submitted to CrossFit.com which allows us to include everyone, even if you have some limitations or haven’t yet mastered certain movements.
NOTE: If you’d still like to see how you stack up against the rest of the world, you’ll either have to calculate and keep track of where you would have finished on the CrossFit.com Leaderboard, or register separately on open.crossfit.com.
Registration Costs
- $35 for a t-shirt or tank and participation in all 5 weeks of Friday Night Lights! **Must register by Jan. 31 to receive a t-shirt or tank!
- $20 with no t-shirt or tank, but full participation in all 5 weeks of Friday Night Lights!
**CLICK HERE TO REGISTER – if you don’t have Gmail or a Google account you can sign up for an account (you don’t need Gmail) or fill out the form at the gym.
What is the CrossFit Open?
The CrossFit Open is an online competition that gives the world-wide CrossFit community a chance to see how they might stack up against the rest of the world in the sport of CrossFit. While the top finishers in the Open will get a chance to move on to the 2019 CrossFit Games, for most of us the Open presents other opportunities. Opportunities to challenge ourselves (regardless of ability level), to break down physical or mental barriers, to inspire each other, to support our fellow Five Alarm athletes, and to have an amazing time doing it!
Every Thursday night (starting February 21) for the 5 weeks of the Open, CrossFit will release a new workout, and participants have until 7pm the following Monday to submit their scores. They can then see their ranking in the world, the region, the state, the city, or even inside their own gym! Think of it as everyone in the world belonging to the same CrossFit gym for one day per week, and instead of recording your score on the whiteboard you would do it on the CrossFit Games website.
Why we love the Open…
Granted, it’s a love/hate relationship.
We hate it for the fear of not knowing what is coming, and the certainty that it will be out of our comfort zone. But we LOVE it for the same reasons; we know that the fear pushes us and that this is when PRs happen. Because despite prior struggles, during the Open it’s different. You’ll have the competitive spirit, the rush of adrenaline, and the whole gym cheering you on and pushing you to do more than you imagined you could.
We LOVE it for the community aspect. Being able to work out with your friends on the same team and help your team win.
We LOVE it because it pushes us further, and it gives us all a taste of competition in the safety and comfort of our own community.
We LOVE it because everyone is UNITED with the same goal. Help your teammates come in, do the work out, accumulate points, cheer everyone on, and enjoy the party. During this unique 5-week period the morning and evening classes get to come together, mingle, compete and celebrate together each Friday night. There is no other time or event like it all year!
FAQs
What if I can’t do some of the movements/weights, should I still register to compete?
Absolutely! This isn’t about what you could or couldn’t do last year. It’s not about what other people in the gym can or can’t do. This experience is about YOU. We want you to push outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Besides, who knows when you might get that first Double Under, HSPU, Pull Up, etc.? Also, CrossFit HQ does a great job of providing scaling options to make this accessible to anyone.
If I do Scaled versions of workouts, will my score still count toward the team competition?
It does! In fact, we will be using a scoring system that levels the playing field for everyone. Your team will DEFINITELY benefit from your participation.
I can’t make it on Friday nights, can I still participate?
Yes! We know that Fridays won’t work for everyone. It is our goal to get as many people in on Friday nights as possible to cheer on one another and build our community; however, if you can’t make Friday night, the scheduled and recommended make-up day/time will be Saturday during Open Gym (9-11am). Remember, though, whenever you may choose to complete (or redo) the workout, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure someone will be available to judge you.
I have the 12 times per month membership. Will FNL count towards my classes?
No, FNL will NOT count toward your 12 visits/month!
Tips for a Successful Open
- Attend FNL every week! It’s a scientific fact that FNL attendance is directly correlated to greater fitness. #science
- Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. We all want to do our best, and in doing so, we put much more pressure on ourselves to perform to our expectations. But always have fun while you’re doing it, otherwise it’s not so enjoyable. Besides, the best part of the Open is having fun with our community!
- Get in the trenches! Compete, cheer, judge, yell for your fellow teammates!
- #byob every Friday night!
Remember, sign up before January 31 to get in before the Draft! And even if you choose not to register, feel free to join in the fun and come on out to one or all the Friday Night Lights events and cheer on your fellow Five Alarm athletes!
