“Murph” was written in honor of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy who was killed in action on June 28, 2005 during Operation Red Wing in Afghanistan. Lt. Murphy was part of a 4 man Seal team performing a reconnaissance mission when their location was compromised to the Taliban. The two sides engaged in an intense firefight in which the SEAL’s were severely outnumbered. In an effort to make contact with Headquarters to request assistance and provide the location of the team, Lt. Murphy moved into the open to make a call while exposing himself to enemy gunfire. His effort was successful, however, he was severely wounded in the process.
Over the next two hours, the 4 man team fought valiantly but, in the end, only one of the SEAL’s survived. Lt. Murphy’s ability to relay the position of their team ultimately led to the rescue of lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell.
Each Memorial Day, we perform this workout in honor of the brave men and women who serve our country. Whether you do the workout as written or modify in some capacity, we encourage to remember WHY you’re doing it and the sacrifices our servicemen, women, and their families make so we can enjoy the freedoms we do.
